$2 billion in bond debt may move deal forward

There is the murmur of some interesting news out there for those people who have been watching Comcast’s wireless plans with curiosity. That murmur is about a WiMax deal that could come as early as next week. The deal is intended to create a national wireless broadband network which Comcast would share with other companies including Clearwire and Time Warner. That means that it relies on an agreement between several major companies who have had difficulty coming to that agreement. A major problem in the discussions has been financial concerns which Comcast may have eased since it has raised $2 billion from a bond sale designed to help finance the project.

I just don't see what it is that Comcast & Time Warner Cable hope to get out of this deal. Become a competitor to cell phone companies? Are they worried thier high speed wired plant won't be competitive with wireless broadband?

Re: well

An additional revenue stream? A means to work around the current 30% cap of customers that Comcast is bumping up against? Or merely a means to squash potential competition before it really forms?

How about low cost wireless service extensions to their existing cable plant?

Or they see what I see. Their cost for deployment of WiMAX could actually be much cheaper than that of any provider if they run copper to the towers at DOCSIS 3.0 speeds that can serve a majority of customers on smaller tiers.

WiMAX can also be used to transmit more than just IP based services. I don't know what kind of spectrum they might have but with their coverage footprint of cable across their markets, the network is more than capable of handling the load including their powerboost services.

They are also in a better position than what Sprint will ever be at this point. Of course all the problems Comcast has with it's landline will also go into it's wireless with bit torrent throttling amongst other things according to users here. It's one step for WiMAX though as the technology struggles to get adopted by carriers who see the big reward at the end of the tunnel but are falling short on financial backing to make such a thing a reality.

I think the goal is to become more telco-ish, By providing wireless voice/data they can take revenue from there competitors more. First it was Voip, now its wireless. Comcast wants to become another ATT i am convinced.

Re: wimax future

You'd need a pretty big cell-phone to see the benefits of HD, I'd think...

nope is all about being able to provide a diverse bundle of communication products and be able to play on a more even playing field with verizon and other phone companies that already provide four services.

Who needs HD on a 3" or smaller display? I mean seriously wtf is the point? I keep reading arounds wbout being able to get HD on phones. "The mind wobbles" as to why it matters on that teeny display. To get enough pixel density to actually be called HD, any text or even images would be seem to project as being so freaking small that stuff would have to be almost unviewable. Additionally the CPU power needed to process that much data is beyond what these devices can reasonably handle w/o lots of frame drops and temps high enough to fry bacon or roast a chicken.

I am just not getting it from the tech on the receiving end, even if one accepts 480i or whatever as being "high definition". I mean the battery will last like 20-30mins processing that much data per sec.

I assume it must work because I recall reading places like Japan already have this or something along the same lines...but really, I just don't "get it"????!!???

Give Comcast a reality check!

WiMax?!?!

Comcast can't manage their HSI network effectively and now they want to screw up WiMax?

Seriously, Comcast doesn't have the resources available to make Docsis 3.0 available to the totality of their HSI network, unless it is in an area that Verizon is deploying FIOS. Frankly, Comcast cannot verify today that each subscriber's HSI performance meets Comcast's specifications.

So, Comcast wants WiMax? OK, cool for those in areas with enough user concentration that WiMax will work, but what about the rest of their HSI network subscribers that have been paying Comcast's bills for years? What do we get out of WiMax?

Likely, nothing. Frankly, Comcast seems to be having trouble managing their HSI networks and that gives me no confidence that Comcast can do anything decent with WiMax.

Comcast is burdened with HSI/HDTV systems with no capacity to meet today's needs. What our bills contributing to Comcast's bottom line are paying for is Comcast's supplying state of the art HSI/HDTV and now wireless to those selected areas that can pay the freight, and those areas are where Verizon is laying down FIOS.

The balance of Comcast subscribers are paying for Comcast to install state of the art services in selected wealthy areas only. None of the vast majority of Comcast's HSI/HDTV subscribers will EVER see much significant advancement in service levels or capabilities, yet we are paying for WiMax for limited areas that can pay the bills.

Let Comcast deny my statements. They cannot do it. Comcast cannot even prove to a third party that my subscription level can be met every second that I use it.
