said by TK Junk Mail : » www.latimes.com/news/opinion/edi···itorialsCritics of the Adelphia deal complained that letting cable operators consolidate their hold over local markets would make it harder for competitors to enter those markets. They also warned that local regulators would have a tougher time protecting against abuses because they wouldn't be able to compare the local franchise with those of nearby communities. Such complaints, however, overlook what's happened to the communications market over the last decade. With rare exceptions, cable operators haven't competed against each other. Instead, they've battled other providers, including satellite operators and, soon, telephone companies (which will be driven to compete in the cable market, whether consolidated or fragmented, by the cable operators' entry into phone service).
You know, you criticize MSN for being too liberal and the LA Times can be just as bad.
As for competition, I have it between 2 cable companies where I live and the prices are not only lower BUT service is better than in the one provider area. The editor who wrote that tripe probably has no experience with living in a 2 cable provider area. |

| Year ago I had 2 providers in my neighborhood and even though 1 company never really offered me any service, their cable was in the ground and my rate was about 20-25% cheaper that my old house across town- same provider. It was all new so service never came into the deal. The 2nd provider pulled out abandoning their plant and prices went up overnight. |

| reply to ieolus I lived in a Comcast/RCN serviced area. Now that was nice.. super low prices, and great high speed internet. I pay twice as much now that I'm in Comcast only territory (about 25 miles North). |

| reply to ieolus I don't know about 2 cable providers in the same market, but according to the GAO, 10% or less of U.S. consumers even have a choice of more than one provider (cable, telco, whatever).
I would imagine the amount of people that have a choice of more than one cable provider is easily in the low single digit percentage. |
