Difficult to get DialTone or answer ringing phone

For the past few days I have had difficulty with both line 1 and line 2. When the phone is ringing, I can pick up the phone and get silence but the phone keeps ringing. After hanging up and picking up a few times, I will get the call.

Also, when trying to make a call, I will pick up the phone and get silence. After several hangup/pickups, I will get dialtone. I have noticed, when I am getting silence, the LED on the PAP2T is not blinking. I even picked up another phone at the same time as I had silence and the two could hear each other but the LED on the PAP2T was not blinking. So, when I say "silence", I can hear battery voltage in the ear piece.

I have different kinds of phones on both lines and it does not seem to matter if it is a cordless or an old GTE phone.

Any ideas why the PAP2T would ignore or not sense the off-hook condition? Could the PAP2T be going bad?

edit: not sure it matters...I'm on galvatron, provisioning on. Also, not getting dialtone about 1 out of 5 times. Have powercycled the pap2t and network yesterday.

edit2: All 4 lights on the pap2t are lit...I am registered. When browsing to the pap2t, the status screen says off hook, but the LED is not blinking when I am getting the silence.

Have you tried one of the others servers by chance?

Are the phones directly connected to the pap2t or are you using house wiring?

Line 1 is connected to house wiring. Line 2 is direct connect to a phone and fax. I am sure that the house wiring is not connected to the phone company.

I have not tried any other server since I figure it doesn't seem to be server related.

Could there be an interaction with using a softphone (not registering), with the softphone using newyork-2 and the pap2t going to galvatron? When I did my testing of the problem, it had been over 24 hours since the last use of the softphone.

I'm having similar issues - on occasion there is no dialtone. Every other incoming call does not actually "pick up" when the phone is answered. Using "flash" on the phone, or hanging up/pick up again on occasion would cause the call to connect. Most of the time just goes to voicemail.

The phone is connected directly to the PAP2T.

Are you using the softphone at times? I haven't had further issues since my latest power cycle. I have not tried the softphone. Perhaps tomorrow, I'll try the softphone again from work to see if the trouble returns in the evening.
Does anyone know if it is a problem to have the pap2t connect to galvatron for line 1&2, but use newyork-2 on softphone from a different location? My softphone does not register, so, supposedly, incoming calls should continue to the pap2t. I used to do this when everything was old servers without problem.

Normally the last device to register either ata or softphone gets the calls. But if the softphone isn't registering at all I would think it wouldn't be an issue.

In my case, no softphone was being used. Just regular one-line setup. Second line is enabled, however.

phone continues ringing after picking up - increasingly common VT problem. call it in and have them make changes for you.

Could it be the power supply is going bad and the pap2 isn't really seeing the phones being picked up?

the status screen says "offhook" but dial tone isn't supplied.

The problem has disappeared and have not had it happen again. I just did the offsite softphone today and situation did not re-occur.

However, something new tonight, and I tried again after a complete power cycle of everything, faxes fail to send. Tried to send to two known good places, no luck. I know faxing is considered unreliable, but I have had decent success for almost 2 years. Tried to send about 15 times and get communication errors.

I'll try again tomorrow.

I've deviated from my original topic, but...
I left my fax try, over and over a couple different fax numbers. I found that the pap2t ethernet light would stop blinking after the fax connected (data flow stopped). The fax machine would take another 20 seconds before hanging up. Then, about the time I was going to make changes, suddenly, test faxes went thru to the two different numbers I was dialing. Then I sent a third fax that I wanted to send last night, went thru perfect.

Could it be that VT made a change this morning or rebooted a troubled server? I'm on galvatron.

edit...a strange caller-id number showed up on the remote fax---not my phone number.

Take it off house wiring and just plug a single phone in and see if that changes anything.

Hi! I am having this same problem, incoming call rings, I answer, there is no one there. Have to flash a few times then call connects. People on the other end still hear ringing while this is all going on. OR call comes in and my home answering machine picks up, no message is on my answering machine except some weird noises, caller on other end does not hear my answering machine, still hears ringing and is connected to Via Talk answering system. The Via Talk adapter is not recognizing that my phone is being picked up for some reason. I have the Pap2, provisioned, NY server. Router in DMZ, no SIP or SPI.
Any suggestions to fix myself or does a call need to be made to Via Talk?

Thanks!

Just an update, I called in and CS did some tweaking on their end. Everything seems to be good now. They also sent me some instructions for DMZ, SIP and SPI but I already had that configured on my end, so whatever they did on ViaTalks end is what helped. Also for those of you paying for Priority Support, there currently is no prompt, you have to hit #2, then #4 right after. I waited for a while 19 people ahead of me. I had to ask how to access Priority support.

Hi,

After you hit 2, if you listen to the following prompt, it says 'if your a viatalk business class support customer, please press 4'. I don't think it plays if you don't select that you're already a customer which may be where the confusion lies?

Did it give you the callback option?

I do remember hearing business class support, so is this the same as Priority support? I didn't have to call back again so I didn't have a chance to try pressing 4

Yes it did, I just chose to wait. 19 people was a bit of a wait but not too bad. I remember back about a year ago there would be 50 people ahead of me! LOL that's when I got the Priority Support package.

Happening again today...don't get dial tone even though the PAP2T says off hook...and have to try a couple times in order to answer an incoming call. Both line 1 and line 2.

power cycle seemed to clear the trouble. Have not used softphone.
