| Can a router provide vpn service to a laptop at a hotspot?
Hello,
While using a public wifi hotspot (or some other un-secure internet connection), I want to be able to establish a vpn connection to my home wireless router and access the internet with my home connection. I realize I could run OpenVPN on an additional computer at home, but, I don't have an extra computer at home.
Can I install DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54G (Firmware version v8.00.2) and do this? My router only has 8mb of ram and 2mb of flash (according to DD-WRT's install instructions.
If not, are there other routers that have this capability?
I realize there are paid vpn services that can provide me with this service (I have used one of them) while traveling, but it seems like a router might have the ability to do this.
Thanks for any instructions/advice.

| Not with the 8MB Linksys, no. If you upgrade to the 16MB (I think?) Linksys you should be able to run a PPTP server on there and accomplish what you want.
I used the Buffalo WHR-G54S routers for ages. They can use the same DD-WRT firmware, although I can't find them for sale anymore. I'd just look for the cheapest router that supports the DD-WRT features you want and go with that. -- Linux Haters Unite! |

| reply to joe 88 MattE,
Thanks for the info. Sorry if it was a dumb question. It wasn't clear to me when reading about various routers that acting as a vpn server was something a router could do for sure. It seems like a nice capability that anyone with a laptop would want to have on their home router, for when they're away.
Now I just need to get educated on DD-WRT.
Thanks again.

| That wasn't a dumb question at all. I owned an 8MB flash Linksys at one point and was surprised at the limited capabilities aftermarket firmware provided as well.
Good luck! -- Linux Haters Unite! |
