[AB] Slow speeds in Lethbridge

I'm on the West side of Lethbridge and have been noticing quite slow speeds over the past couple days. Maxing out around 1mbit on a 5mbit connection. Not looking for any troubleshooting tips, just wondering if anyone else is in this area and experiencing the same issues?

Sorry to hear that i have lived on the westside for 8yrs and have been on shaw all that time - and every year around this time the internet goes to hell and it won't get much better thanks to 5000 students coming into town for the school year sadly you won't see anything near 5mb download
and calls to shaw will be a waste of time.they will say your modem looks fine maybe you have a virus etc etc .funny thing is we all on the west side must have one of those virus that kick in around 6pm till 3am .wait till may then it will get better -thx shaw crappy speed as again

I assumed it was student related, glad to hear others have the same issue (as twisted as that sounds... at least I have a good idea what the problem is).

Just spoke to shaw, about my speeds. They say nothing is wrong in Lethbridge!

My tracerts are showing 400ms+ at lb.shawcable.net hop.

Speedtests from shaw are down to 90k/sec .

Of course a tech has to come out and the first available in 8 days away!

They said they would escolate the issue up to check for a node saturation, but i am not putting any hope in that.

Everyone who is having this call in to shaw and complain. Maybe this will be the year that they finally fix the issue on the westside. Summer is speedy and great, students come back and its back to 100% shit.

If you don't call and voice your complaint and book the tech ( which i know is a waste of time cause at 9am things will be speedy ) then the issue will not get dealt with. If a few people call and complain then why fix the issue, however if a truck load of people call to complain and techs are wasting their days running around for an issue they know already what the problem is.

Then maybe they will get a team in to increase the capicity.

Call in and ask specifically for them to check the saturation on your node. If the tech you talk to seems unable to do this, call in again. I know it's a bit of a pain, but the tool which allows TSRs and others to check node saturation isn't available to everyone, and especially not newer people.

Should the TSR find node saturation, then they will escalate it up to the appropriate departments who will start the process of splitting the node or, in large scale issues, the router. While the voice of several people never hurts, Shaw tends to be quite good at responding to saturation issues simply through their discovery, rather than through necessity driven by customer complaint.

Sure enough schools out for the day on the westside and we are back down to crap

I had a friend check out the saturation and consumption reports for Lethbridge and, surprise surprise, he did come across a saturated card on the West side of the city. He was also able to confirm that the usage increase and saturation are quite recent, and seems to coincide with the return of the University students.

He has now forwarded this information to the appropriate people, so at the very least, the wheels should start turning. From my understanding, there are some other necessary upgrades within the Lethbidge area right now that are taking priority, so I'm not sure even roughly how long the process will take, I'm afraid.

Yes I have spoke to someone as well and the westside is just waiting on equipment and then it will be upgraded however that could be a few months. Make sure you call shaw for credit cause the internet is horrible from 4pm to 1am after the power outage last night , did a shaw speed test and got 22 megabit with power boost.

Right now 0.5 megabit

adding free extreme to all these new subscribers for 6 months doesn't help much either when they are all students, sounds good on paper but in practice....? i dont know

I hear there is some work taking place soon which should alleviate some of these speed issues in Lethbridge.

This is getting retarded. It used to be better at night however now its almost 24/7. Anyone know if shaw has a corporate complaint email or something?

For those of you in West Lethbridge, I've just been informed that the primary problematic card on that system has been split today. If you can let me know whether your speeds improve during peak times, it would be greatly appreciated.

Just came along this forum which seems to be somewhat recent... I live on the westside of lethbridge and have had generally great speed with the exception of weekends. All of a sudden starting on saturday (two days ago) the speed has come down dramatically. I am often having trouple just opening basic webpages. I didnt really have this problem at the beginning of september when the students were back until now. Ill be calling if it doesnt change very soon!

i suggest when u phone, specifically ask about upstream & downstram SNR. i had about 50% download speeds, upload was horrible max 67kbs - 220kbs (on extreme). turns out noise in the line on upstream SNR was causing all the problems. a guy came out, found & fixed the problem a few blocks away, and now(on a saturated node) downloads consistent 70%+ of max, uploads also a consistent 70%+ of max. (i have the surfboard SB5102 modem). this issue affected my entire neibourhood, but because the tsr dispatched a "maintenace tech" (whatever that is) rather than a service guy, my problem, and the neibourhoods was fixed.

You can check your SNR Up and Down from your modem's Admin page (Surfboard 5120 I think?) You can get to this by specifying an IP or by disconnecting the cable line from the back of the modem and release/renewing a bunch till you get a funky ip from the modem.

Also, make sure you are using the newest modem... the difference between an old Terayon modem and the new Surfboards is amazing, and it's because the old Terayons didn't fully support Docsis 2.0 protocols..
