Can I move and downgrade service without breaking contract?

Hello everyone. I'm in a very unique situation here, and I'm wondering what options I have. Let me explain.
I originally ordered dsl in June for a location I was soon to be moving to, that being my mother's house.
I ordered the 3000/768 package with static IP for $49.95 with a 12 month contract. Everything went very smoothly on that front, and on June 21, when I moved, the DSL was waiting for me, just as I'd planned it.
On the morning of June 30 however, things changed drasticly, as my mother quite suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. The person in charge of taking care of my mother's things should anything happen to her, is a total jerk, first telling me I could stay in the house, then doing what he could to throw me out
The situation became very tense for a bit, and at one point, this person changed the telephone number on the line which had the DSL service on it. I updated DSL extreme with the new info, but before the number could even be shown in the system, the idiot had the telephone completely disconnected! Needless to say I had to get out of that location and away from this idiot of a person.
I ended up getting cable internet business class service which had static IPs as well, and transfered that service with me when I finally moved out of Hemet on July 26.
I now reside in Palmdale, and live with a very nice family, and believe me it's a nice change from what I had been going through. The family I live with already has AT&T DSL on their telephone line, so in order for me to get DSL myself from DSLX, in order to not break contract, I'm going to need to have my own line installed from AT&T, which I'm working on doing, though since I'm totally blind, and acording to AT&T, it'll cost $125 to activate a phone jack, it's a bit intimidating, but I'm going to call AT&T today and see what options I have there.
Anyway, since I have business class cable with static IPs, I no longer need the DSLX package with static IP's. In fact, I want to get the lowest level DSL package I can get, since it'll just be a backup internet connection anyway. Once I have a phone number, and working AT&T phone service, can I place a move order that would be different from what I originally ordered? I'd want whatever the lowest DSL package is, with dynamic IPs.
Finally, I currently have an outstanding invoice for $52.83 which is for services to be provided from 9/1/2008 to 10/1/2008 under my original DSL plan I'd ordered in Hemet, which of course doesn't even exist anymore. Do I still need to pay that invoice in full, or could that invoice be updated or something once I get service set up here in Palmdale. It's all very confusing to me, and I want to be sure things are done the right way, and I want to know what options I have with regards to my relationship with DSL extreme. Sorry for the long post, I wanted to be sure I got all the information out. I'll appreciate any responses on what options I have. thanks.

Hi Kd6cae,

You have a couple of options. If family you are staying with is willing to move to DSLEXTREME we may be able to move your account to theyre phone number which would make it so you do not need to get a second phone line.

You can place a move order to move to the new address on a new phone number but you will want to take note of 2 things. First of all it will start your contract over for another 12 months and second of all if you go to a lower plan you will have to pay a downgrade fee. Last time I checked that fee was approximately 60 dollars.

Unfortunately you will need to pay the outstanding bill on the account as the service was not interrupted by dslextreme.

Hi Zak. Thanks very much for the information. I wasn't sure about the bill and if I still needed to pay it, since it said it was for services from 9/1/2008 to 10/1/2008, so thanks for clarifying that. I think what I'll end up doing is get my own phone line installed, get DSL moved to that, then in order to save some money since I already have the faster cable internet as primary anyway, drop the DSL down to the lowest tier, and pay whatever the downgrade fee is. Again thanks. It's been a bit stressful for me these last few weeks, so trying to get this all straightened out without going broke will be a good thing, lol.
I believe I tried to pay my outstanding bill on Monday or Tuesday of this week, and it said it went through, but no money was ever taken, and the invoice is still there, so I'm going to try and pay it again. Thanks.
