[ Express] "A network cable is unplugged"

I just recently had Rogers internet and TV installed.

A message pops up about every 10 seconds in the taskbar saying "A network cable is unplugged". I looked at the ethernet cable at the back of my PC and the light would blink every 10 seconds (as if my PC is only getting short bursts of a connection).

I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged them back in, still the same problem. I also reset the router.

I tried playing Battlefield 2 and it would lag out every time the message would pop up.

Has anyone had this problem? Is it my RJ45 cable? Is it my router?

Honestly, that part's hard to tell without going through the steps needed.... change the cable first, as that's the easiest change to make... if it keeps happening, you may need to change the NIC on your PC.

Could be several things...

• Change the cable, it may have loose ends or a break in one of the conductors.
• Change the port on your router. It may have a bad connection to the circuit board.
• Check your ethernet plug on your PC, whether it be onboard or PCI card. Make sure the cable fits snug.
• Check the ethernet link settings in your NIC driver, also the Half Duplex/Full Duplex settings. I have seen NICs that act weird in Auto mode with certain routers/switches, but when manually set to 100FD they work fine.
• Check for a newer driver for your NIC.

You didn't mention if you are running Windows; if you are look in the Event Manager for recent events in the "System" log... What I get on occasion is an event - a warning - with "source" E100B (easy to spot).

The description says "Adapter Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection: Adapter Link Down"

Very annoying... I assume it is the pathetic Intel NIC drivers that lose their mind periodically. I have tried upgrading and downgrading the drivers (that involves more pain than should be necessary) and Googling but no luck.

It was *very* common about 6 months ago, but now happens infrequently. I tried replacing the RJ45, the router(!), using a PCI NIC instead of onboard ethernet etc etc. Nothing made a difference except it more or less went away in time... very frustrating to say the least.

If there is an event recorded, there may be some clues in there that you can Google for and at least find other sufferers... good luck

I had that with my Dlink 624, it's a known firmware issue. I drove me nuts.. I'm trying to download something and every few minutes I would lose my connection

What kind of router are you using?
Is it the wireless SMC Gateway that rogers is providing?

You have a network connection which is unused. So you must have two, one you are using, the other unplugged. Delete it in Networking.
