| Copying over an external DVR HD to another
I've been running a Calvary 400GB drive on my SA 8300HD DVR for a little over 15 months now 24/7. The drive still works perfectly, even being filled and purged of HD video many many times.
I just got another Calvary drive for my gf (500GB) to put on her Moto DCT6416 Series III DVR, but it does not work. The cable co and Motorola still doesn't support external hard drives (BTW if YOU know how to fix this, let me know!!).
What I was going to do was do a mirror image of the 400 drive to the 500 drive using a PC. Would this work or will it scramble up the DVR? I'm not really trying to get the extra space - the newer drive is quieter and cooler, plus who knows how much longer the old one will run for..

| Sorry to say, Moto boxes still do not support external hard drive storage. With the moral at Motorola at an all time low with the dimming sales of the mobile phone sector, I don't think they have had any time or desire to get a simple feature working. They did get a new CEO this year, and with that it takes awhile to build up employee moral, plus finding good smart employees is sometimes hard to do. So while they drag their feet and focus on other area's, SA has had them beat for years now. Both had to redivert attention to designing boxes with Cable card slots, so the FCC mandate should be no excuse to Motorola. Heck, Pace went through the same ordeal with their boxes and they support external storage.
I like their Mobile phones. Not sure why they are doing poorly in that area. Cable boxes on the other hand is not their forte. They have a chance to redeem themselves. All they need to do is release a firmware update that fixes many of the issues people have been bugging about for years (external hard drive support, resolution options, closed caption options, etc..).
It wouldn't hurt to try to image that drive in linux using dd to create a 1:1 disk image. You really have nothing to loose since the new 500 GB drive has nothing on it. If it fails, use it on your computer, take it back, or sell it on e-bay. |

| reply to spudmanmike What i'm worried about is when I plug the 400GB drive into the PC (or Mac), it could write some hidden files to it and render the drive corrupted to the DVR. Do you think the SA is picky with the drive..?? With how flawless and uncomplicated its install was, I wouldn't think so.. |

Files on this HDD will not be able to be used on another STB.
When you connect the dupe HDD (If your able to get it copied from the original) it will force you to reformat it, as the STB ID code will not match.
This is required by DRM. |

| It's a shame, because there's an Iomega 750GB drive for $99 on TigerDirect.

Storage is so cheap. Hope they figure out how to get it working. |
