Only getting 8mbps on 10mbps line!

I have had CenturyTel in Onalaska, WI since November of 2007 and have tried to talk to their technical support numerous times about only getting 8mbps speed on my 10mbps line. I work for an ISP in CA (telecommute) and know how to TS my DSL line. I just need to know if I am capped at the lower speed, are there line code violations or noise on the line? What is it?!?!? I tried to get this information from the technical support rep and they just wanted to have me go through the control panel and do a bunch of unrelated stuff!

Hopefully someone from CenturyTel will look at my account and let me know what is going on...

Most likely because your distance is too far for a full 10, or your line is too small, such as being 26 gauge instead of 24 gauge. Also, the 10 is "up to", meaning no guarantee that you will receive the full 10. The prices are the same from 3-10 on copper, and 15 on fiber.

What modem do you have?

A lot of the earlier revision Westells topped out at around 8.

fuffer, I had forgotten all about that! Thanks!

Check your Westell model number...if it is not "E" for the 6100 you will not attain higher than 7-8. If you have the Westell 327w (wireless router) then you should be OK, or even the Westell 7400 (rarely used 4-port non-wireless router).

Also, log into your modem and find the DSL stats page and post the results. That will help us tell if you're set at 8 due to line distance from your DSLAM.

I have a Zoom ADSL Modem capable of up to 10mbps ADSL2+, so I am pretty sure that isn't the issue.

Does not matter what xDSL Modem that you have. What only matters is your xDSL Stats. Post the Downstream Attenuation, Downstream SNR, Downstream Power Output, Downstream Capacity Used, and Downstream Sync Rate plus the xDSL Modulation being used by the Modem.

If you know how to TS DSL, you would know that it is only the xDSL Stats that truly matter and that they need to be posted to determine what is happening with the xDSL Line.

Ok, everything including your distance, just under 4,000 ft and your cable size, 24 gauge, is just fine for 10MB. It's still not a guarantee that you get the 10MB, but if any way possible you could post your modem transceiver stats it would be appreciated so all of us can take a look.

Thanks.

It may be that the DSLAM you're working out of isn't ADSL2 capable, or if it is, you're not on an ADSL2 card. It doesn't show whether the modulation is G.DMT or ADSL2+, it just says "Standard Multimode", so the determination needs to be made if you're even on equipment that will support speeds higher than 8 Mbps. Maybe dsldude can find that out for you.

Well, a CenturyTel technician came by and determined that the Zoom 5615 (that is supposed to be ADSL2+) wasn't. Swapped in a Westell modem and BAM! 12mbps! Thank you for all your help!

Ouch, that has to sting.

Did you not try updating the Zoom Firmware or setting it manually to ADSL2+ instead of Multimode?
