Audio

I have been having static in my audio as of late, when listening to Much Loud, or the digital music channels. This seems to have occurred around the same time as the addition of the new On Demand services. Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas? Thanks for a reply.

Hmmm.... well, first of all, to add new On Demand services, all we do is drop in a new channel into the guide, and a menu onto the VOD server to reference the new content. That in no way changes or adjusts the signals/frequencies we send to your DCT.

Secondly, all audio and video is transmitted digitally to your DCT. Therefore any degradation of your signal would affect both the audio and video portion of your viewed content, and would sound like listening to a scratched CD. Furthermore, "static" is produced when there is a lack of SNR on an analog medium, I.E. between the analog output of your DCT and the input connections of your speaker. So therefore your most likely culprit would be, the wiring between your DCT and your TV (or Amplifier if you are running it through a stereo/surround sound). Other posibilities include the DCT itself or your TV/stereo/surround sound system. If your TV/stereo/surround sound system is not producing static while playing a DVD, CD, VHS, etc. try changing the wires or bypassing the DCT.

Haven't had the time to check this out yet; but I do have another question for you Marcer. As far as audio volume goes; why are some channels (like Much Loud)at a lower volume than the digital music channels? Is this a result of the signal sent to you, or is there another explanation? These signals are fed to my receiver through the digital out of the cable box. thanks for a reply.

Seemed to have found the problem; checked all the cabling at my receiver/dct and all was fine, went to the distribution area and tightened and checked all connections, and all seems fine again. It is in a closet and sometimes gets hit/disturbed by my family members. Would still like to know about the volume differences though?

This audio problem ( static type noise )occurs whenever the audio is set to advanced, and any compression is used. It occurs on both systems I have running digital cable. This leads me to believe that it is not a cable or piece of my equipment related problem, as the probability of 2 systems developing the same type of problem at the same time is very low.(unless it is a DCT software/hardware issue) It has to be a problem somewhere sooner down the line. My cure has been to use no compression, or no advanced audio settings. It has been occurring since the addition of the new on demand services, but it would seem it is coincidental. The drawback to not using any compression is that the volume differences are more pronounced. As long as the noise isn't present, I can live with it.

Well I know this is my own little venting thread, but the noise is still present. The irony for me is that it occurs on Much Loud, and some of the digital music channels, and these are the main reason I keep cable TV. The volume difference between Much Loud, and Much Vibe is more than 10 dB. Well; I shall see how much this bothers me in the next little while.

When I put a check mark for normal digital in the menu screen, I do not have the audio problems. Just thought I would update this while I'm here.
