 QoS

I noticed some thing the other day. I was downloading a .iso image the other day. My download speed was maxed out and while on the phone. The other person said it was choppy and it sounded it like it did. Once the download finished it was fine.

I have U-Verse so my setup is the TA is behind the RG. I remember when I first got CV setup I didn't have this problem. I don't think anything has changed on my setup.

Figured I would see what everyone says before I call support.

I'm not familiar with the Uverse RG--can you set QoS on it (to a MAC/IP address or a port)? I presume your PC plugs into it parallel to the TA (ie. the RG contains a switch), correct?

No QoS on the RG itself it's a 2wire device so very limited.

Basically from the 2wire I have a cat5e running up to 1gig switch which is where my desktop, TA and printer are plugged in. I do have the TA set to a dedicated IP.

Does the CV TA have LAN outputs? If so, one way to get QoS I would think would be to plug the CV TA WAN to the UV RG LAN, and the plug your switch from the CV TA LAN to a Switch port, and then your computer and printer behind the TA by plugging them into other ports on the Switch. You would have to change the subnet of the TA to be different than the RG's (which is 192.168.1.X by default). And also you would have to put the TA into DMZPlus mode.

I think this would work...

You might try posting this one over at uverseusers.com as well. Maybe Koolkid or someone else who has played with the RG's settings knows some secret way to get QoS on the RG...

It's been discussed before but no real way to do it currently.

To me the RG as a router is just not up to par IMO. That's one reason I have never been a huge fan of the RG's. Just like deleting devices from it.

I think I agree.

It is designed to be an all-in-one device and be, essentially, idiot-proof. And it serves that purpose well.

But when you attempt to idiot proof something, you end up disabling tools and/or features that otherwise might be useful (see Windows, thru the years). QoS is probably not seen as a feature that many consumers are interested in.

gdm, you (and probably many other frequent posters to these forums) are the exception to the rule. It is a useful feature that I would think would not be too hard to add into the RG's firmware/software/whatever would control that.

Yeah it could be integrated if they want to. QoS to me is basic now a days with how popular VoIP is.

Hopefully the RG interface will get a bit better. I would actually prefer U-Voice it was $20 to $25 a month for unlimited. We will see how the Detroit testing does with the pricing there.

Pity. Is there a reasonable way to set the RG up in bridge mode and allow a router behind it to obtain a public IP? Then, you could use a good QoS router...

Nope the RG is the brain of U-Verse so it controls the TV, Internet and phone if you can get u-voice.

The only option is to set an IP to DMZ mode which you could then put a router on that.

That is exactly what I did. Everything, including my CV TA, sits behind a QoS router running in the DMZ plus mode of the Uverse RG.

I am seriously debating that if my tests don't work.

I talked to CV and they suggested I open up the following UDP ports. Right now from initial tests it seems to actually be working. I plan to test it out a bit more later in the week when I am home.

Hope it works out. My biggest issue with putting the TA right behind the RG (and in front of all my other hardware) has to do with the internal "StreamEngine" QoS built into the D-Link TA. The StreamEngine would always auto-detect the upstream bandwidth incorrectly, and doesn't allow for a manual setting.

Well I found out two things tonight. I was downloading some updates and someone called. Choppy as usual with the ports open. These were adobe updates so I could hit pause. I did and no problem at all.

My wife was transferring files from my server to her new laptop via wireless. So just using the LAN, in this case the server is connected to the switch then switch to RG.

She said it was so bad she couldn't use the phone and used her cell instead.

Ok so after phone calls with CV and U-Verse. CV is saying it's u-verse since the TA works fine as long as the bandwidth isn't being used a 100% of the time.

Talked to U-Verse and they are sending out a new RG friday to swap and see if that makes a difference.

I have had similar problems with my CallVantage service. From what I have read in the forum QOS is just not there. I started with the 2wire 2701HG-B and the D-Link 5102. Choppy sound when I used the internet while on a call was terrible.

I switched back to my 5100b with a Netgear Router. I placed the ATA behind the router on Port 4 with it set for high priority. That was fruitless, I still had intermittent choppy audio.

I then dumped the Netgear router and went to a Linksys WRT54G with the ATA in front of and behind the router with no help.

My next effort was to switch to the Motorola modem still no improvement. I now have the Motorola modem in the bridged mode with the ATA in front of the Linksys router. I have yet to try it behind the router.

I even upgraded from DSL pro to elite.

My buddy who is on Road Runner has never complained about his service except for when he calls a friend in Denver that has Comcast digital phone.

Is your buddy on CV or using TW's Digital Phone.

I have a feeling the new RG won't help. I just have to be aware not to saturate the line when talking.

My friend is using CV on TWC-RoadRunner. He opted for CV over TWC-Digital Phone due to features and price. Plus AT&T's solid reputation. It is a shame, from what I have read, AT&T-CV does not have the best reputation. It is a good service. I just wish AT&T would support QOS and promote CV more.
