| Bittorrent causing SE to drop me offline?
Ok so this could be a weird coincidence but it seems to be too suspicious at this point. I don't BT all that often. Maybe fire up once a month to download content. Like clock work every time I do about 1/2 hour after starting a download my Internet connection drops. I reset the modem it all comes back. So I figure as a traffic control policy this would be really dumb. Way to obvious. But what if this is impact of automated system that is meant to slow down my connection gone wrong? I wouldn't expect this from SE. But it has happened so many times I can't ignore it. My DSL almost never drops offline otherwise. It's rock solid %99 of the time. But up comes the BT client and down goes the DSL line. Thoughts?

| reply to dustintodd I've been having the same problem for a long time. Speakeasy's current claim is that the modem (Briteport 8012-V1) is buggy and that I need to reduce the number of connections my BT client is making.
They claim there is new firmware for the modem but the vendor won't allow them to install it.
I've been with Speakeasy for many years (both personal and business), but it looks like it is time to move. |

| reply to dustintodd Briteport is bridging, my router is a Linux box with a pretty simple iptables setup.
Just for kicks, I did throttle the BT connection count way down, and capped the throughput at 40KB/s down, 8KB/s up. No improvement - was disconnected yesterday evening. |

You may want to reduce some IP timeouts in the Linux NAT function.. (resets and filtered traffic from other ISP's may be filling up your /proc/net/ip_conntrack table. )
to reduce table fill.. cd to directory /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter
echo 1800 > ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_close_wait echo 3600 > ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established |

| I have a briteport V-1, and I torrent 24/7. When I'm home I slow it to about 50%, but when I'm gone its usually pretty close to max. I ssh into my box all the time to add torrents no problem. My modem is on bridged.. and I have a buffalo router. It does nat for all of my computers, except for the torrent server which is on a static. I used to have a problem with my connection dropping when I was torrenting and playing xbox live.. but I took a Linksys switch out of the mix and now it's all good.
I'd try connecting directly to the BT and see if the issue happens there.. if it does, it's probably time to buy a new modem. The actiontec 701/704 (the kit best buy sells, the 704 doesn't work with spk voip..) works on Speakeasy, and I think it's a bit more stable then the BT.. plus you can see your connection speed and margins/errors in it which is damn cool.
Also, did you know there's a test now for seeing if your ISP limits torrents? »broadband.mpi-sws.mpg.de/transpa···test.php I can only get the simple test to work, but I haven't seen anything bad yet.. With all the other ISPs clamping down on torrent and metering bandwidth it makes me wonder how long speakeasy will be around. |

P.S. I use the same settings to defend against a smurf attack. |

| reply to dustintodd I have speakeasy, i torrent all the time, I never get knocked off ever... i have a pfsense box that handles the nat, and my modem is a bridged zyxel... I have no problems at all whatsoever
i highly highly doubt speakeasy will ever do the crap comcast/verizon does just due to the target customer of speakeasy is a niche, and they usually dont get "omg imma download my britney spears full discography torrent 20 times" person |
