[Vista] Workstation MFC application error...

i am having a problem with vista that is driving me nuts. i have a Sunna D60 vinyl cutter hooked up to my machine, and it runs off a program called "summa winplot". the workflow goes like this---Coreldraw X4----->Winplot----->cutter cuts design.

here's the problem: when i hit the winplot plugin button in coreldraw, winplot ALWAYS opens fine. i hit the cut button in winplot, sometimes it cuts fine, but other times i get the error message: "Workstation MFC Application has stopped working" or something close to that. i looked at the event viewer logs, and it says the fault is caused by MFC42.DLL, unknown, or KERNEL7.dll. i also sometimes get an out of memory error, but very rarely. the people at summa told me to turn off UAC, but that makes no sense to me if winplot works sometimes.

i have all sorts of error logs if anyone wants to take a stab at this. it's the only problem i've had with Vista that i can't figure out so far. BTW, it worked FLAWLESSLY on the 32 bit version of vista.

oh yeah---the PC's specs:

Abit IP35 PRO mainboard
Q6600 2.4 quad proc
4GB Geil ultra ddr26400
Windows Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 (problem happened pre-SP1 also)

i don't think anything else matters hardware wise, but if needed i'll post the whole list.

Is it possible the winplot program replaced (overwrote) MFC42.dll with another version? Can you check to see if multiple versions of those .dll's exist?

If things get any worse, I'll have to ask you to stop helping me.

MFC42.DLL, version 6.0.8267.0 is the one in the error log, but the version i found in windows--->system32 is 6.6.8063.0 as is the one in windows---->syswow64

the one giving the error is in the summa winplot folder.

the one giving the error is in the summa winplot folder.
Try renaming the MFC42.DLL in the summa winplot folder to MFC42.OLD which will render that particular file inactive.

If multiple versions of a file, such as the MFC42.DLL, exist in different locations that can be a problem.

i do have one quick question about the file in question though. will it cause any problems that i renamed the newer one, and the program is now using the older one? should i update the files in the system folders?

The version of the MFC42.DLL that was in the summa winplot folder was 6.0.8267.0 while the version of the MFC42.DLL in the System32 (and SysWOW64) folder is 6.6.8063.0.

I had to look twice but the version in the System32 folder is the later version. (6.6.8063.0 > 6.0.8267.0).

What is interesting is that there was no problem on Vista 32-bit.

Was the same version of Winplot used on Vista 32-bit?

Are you now using the latest version of WinPlot?

i am using the latest version of winplot. it is the same version i was using under vista 32 bit. never had a hiccup using 32.

LOL---i didn't catch the version number until you pointed that out. i just looked at the "8063" and "8267"

well, it happened again today. here's the event viewer entries:

The KERNEL7.dll from the second error should be found in the Summa Winplot folder.

You can try renaming the KERNEL7.dll to KERNEL7.old and see if makes a difference but I am not sure what functionality that may remove from the Summa Winplot program.

There does seem to be some program incompatibility between the Summa Winplot program and your current Windows installation.

Is everything the same comparing your installation of Summa Winplot in Vista X64 and Vista X86. That is, were you using the same version of Summa Winplot in Vista X86? Also, were you using the same version of CorelDraw?

Have you tried uninstalling Summa Winplot and then cleanly reinstalling Summa Winplot?

Did you install anything else for Summa Winplot or CorelDraw in Vista X86 such as Visual Basic?

i had the same exact setup under X86. i did upgrade coreldraw from X3 to X4, but it was an attempt to resolve this problem. the newer version of corel made no difference.

i'm going to try renaming KERNEL7.dll and see what happens. i will also try a fresh reinstall if that doesn't work.

i haven't updated either of the programs. corel X4 has no updates yet, and winplot i have never seen patches for---they just release newer versions. i don't think VB was installed unser X86, but i'm not sure.

EDIT

i renamed KERNEL7.dll, and the program wouldn't even open. i did a fresh install, and got the MFC42.dll error again, then remembered to rename the one in the winplot folder. i then purposely sent an insanely detailed file to winplot to see if i could get it to crash, but it hasn't yet since the rename of the MFC42.dll file. we'll see what happens later when i start cutting more decals.

well, it is happening regularly again. was fine for a few days not all has gone to hell again. this is the only program that gives me problems, so i think a hardware problem is out of the list of possible problems.

damn this is driving me nuts.

If you check here:

Start > Control Panel > Classic View > Problem Reports and Solutions > View problem history

Then, if you right-click any of the errors and select "View problem details" is there any other information given?

Also, you said you were getting "out of memory" errors. Do you remember the exact error you were getting?

these are the latest ones.

the out of memory message was from winplot, and IIRC all it was was a pop up box that said "out of memory" with an "OK" or "close" button. it was a pretty vague error message LOL.

the 2 culprits still seem to be MFC42.dll and KERNEL7.dll

What locations does the MFC42.DLL exist in?

Do a "Search" of the system for MFC42.DLL.

Try an "Advanced Search" and select a Location of the C: drive and select to include "non-indexed, hidden and system files".

Does the MFC42.DLL exist in any third party program folder?
