Canada was originally a French and then a British colony. In 1867, Canadian provinces began to assert their independence, after several decades of dissent, by submitting the British North American Act to Parliament in London. This was passed and upon Royal Assent, Canada was born.

Canada is a democracy and a constitutional monarchy. In his book "How Canadians Govern Themselves" (5th edition) the late Sentaor Eugene Forsey explains how Canadians govern themselves. He answers in a very clear way that puzzling question, "Why does Canada still have a Queen?"
