After dealing with 3 years of problems with Roadrunner, connection speed slow down to the point of being unusable in the daytime, constantly going down and generally inconsistent service was happy when FIOS was available in my area. FIOS has thus far exceeded my expectations, have had zero problems and speed is as advertised for me 99% of the time.

    Sorry, I'm not impressed.

I pulled less than 1/2 your latenecy (41ms) to that same server at nearly 7,000 miles and I did nearly 10X the speed. As a subscriber of 20/5 FiOS, I know it's nothing to brag about or worthy of calling other people idiots for having a different provider. Just enjoy your service instead of looking to belittle everyone else's.

No, I don't think cable is better otherwise at that house I would have still have TWC instead of FiOS. This whole thing started with your review trolling.

You starting this pissing contest by coming unsolicited in to my Cox review and called me an idiot for being a Cox sub and that I should pray for FiOS and that FiOS destroys Cox. Which is simply bullshit. Every one of your claims and lies has been refuted many times, most by your own words detailing your nightmare experience with Verizon.

Even better, in your eagerness to call people who don't have FiOS idiots, you missed the fact that I was already a FiOS subscriber and have had the big 50Mb tier you brag about being available and currently have the same 20Mb tier you do.

You can excuse make for your mediocre test results all you want. FiOS doesn't destroy or own anything and your nightmare install experience, mediocre speed test and latency results prove as much. FiOS is good, but not the end all be all that you think it is and and worse, have you review trolling calling everyone else idiots over.

Do yourself a favor. Ditch the bragging and review troll bullshit and just enjoy the service that took 70 hours on the phone, 12 missed appointments and 3 months to finally get working at an acceptable level.

The Wellington server is not typical for ping and distance. See the article at »www.citylink.co.nz/information/ for some details of their network. I think the reason they are exceptional is the number and arrangement of their peering.

All the other ISPs in New Zealand have much higher ping times with corresponding lower speed tests. Remember optimal RWIN is a function of speed and latency, because you still need the return ACKs before you can accept the buffer as complete.

From their website, it appears CityLink was designed by real engineers.

Edit to add speedtest results to Wellington on 20/5 FiOS.

This latency thing started when he lied about him "owning" with 10ms latency to the UK and 15 to the west coast. When he actually bothered to run the test he got same results I and everyone else with FiOS gets (as shown by DSLR line monitors in the FiOS HSI forum) which is 80-100ms cross-country latency. 80ms is nothing special. Latency on FiOS is nothing special. So he had to try and find a server that gave decent results ignoring the fact that it will give everyone decent results.

Better hope your connection stays lit

Don't bet on FIOS. If Verizon steps on your line, it can be a week before you get a repair. It's a week if you get up each morning dialing the same number and talking to the same people, starting from the beginning, like Bill Murry in Groundhog Day. Every day ends the same at 5:00 PM with the realization that the repair was never dispatched. So you get up the next day and start from the beginning again, over and over.

I choke on Verizon's phone mail "Verizon is very committed to your repair appointment." A classic marketing misnomer to clarify that your repair is not important.

Maybe satellite will be the answer. It may not be fast, but the squirrels don't seem to bother it.

I've had Verizon service in one form or another for over 10 years, starting with dial-up, then DSL, then FIOS internet, then, for the last year, FIOS with TV. After 30 years of being abused and ignored by Cablevision, Verizon is almost a miraculous improvement...almost. It is very reliable, having lost it only once in the last 2 years, and then only for a couple of hours. Their TV service is head and shoulders ahead of Cablevision in reliability, programing, and cost. I had considered dish TV service, but there wasn't enough programing or cost difference between it and cable, and our home is completely immersed in huge oak and hickory trees, so reception was a concern. When FIOS TV came through town, we were among the first to install it, and I haven't had any reason to be sorry. There have been a few moments with Verizon TV however, particularly with their "Interactive Program Guide" and their inability to resist tweaking it to death. The original was lousy, and their revision is much better in that it works most of the time. What is annoying is their constant revision of the listings' format (like eliminating the cast listing for movies). Just when they seem to have gotten the thing to be acceptable, they change something, usually for the worse. Also, they had a lot of problems with service handling at the outset, but that now seems to be under control.

In short, just about all of their deficits can be described as "teething problems", and could be expected with a new undertaking of this magnitude. At least, they seem to be doing something about them, something that Cablevision never seemed to understand. I would recommend them over their New Jersey competition in a heartbeat.

I have had Fios internet, phone and TV service for just over a year now and my family and I are pretty pleased with it. We have the 20/5 triple package which was about $120.00 for the first year and is now $136.00. The install was fairly smooth but it took the tech a longer time to install than it should have but it was one of the first times the fellow had done it so the process is probably much faster now.

One thing that was not clearly stated to me via the sales people was that the deal only applies after a month of paid service at the full price which can be a shock. I don't recall the amount but I was very angry about it and made it clear to them.

Customer service seems to be pretty typical. Phone techs and reps are nice and relativly knowledgeable. Other than my first conversation with them about the first bill I have only used them once but it was a big problem. One morning about a week ago I lost all service. No phone. No internet. No TV. I called them right away and a tech determined that the problem was outside and likely a problem with the line on the pole. He told me he would try and have a tech there that afternoon and guaranteed that one would be there the next day before 4pm. I waited at the house all afternoon and nobody came. I called and was told that it was scheduled for the following day and that the tech must have made a mistake scheduling. I was then told that a tech would be there the next day. Again I waited at home and again nobody came. At 5pm I called and was assured that a tech would be there.....eventually. Finally at 8pm that night a fellow showed up and fixed it in about 5 minutes. Bottom line....3 days of no service. Bad. Very bad.

So customer service is terrible so now how about the service itself?

Phone service is great. No complaints at all about the quality of sound.

TV service is good. I say "good" and not great because of the lack of MSNBC in the available channels. Also, we have the DVR service and I often wish the drive in the unit was bigger. HD programming uses a huge amount of space and I often have to clear out shows I would otherwise keep longer.

Internet service is good as well. I really don't notice that much of a speed difference between Fios and our old Time Warner cable service except when it comes to upstream speed. I upload tons of photos of my family for out of state relatives and doing so is now much much faster. It used to take hours and now it's minutes.

    Hope this helps you decide.

    My Other Reviews·Comcast
I love FiOS even though I constantly complain about their router, poor billing, and poor ordering process.. If they give you an Actiontec router, be prepared for your wireless clients to time out from time to time... This is, no doubt, a widespread issue with this Actiontec Router.. Many people, I read, Are having the same issue...

For my Local wired clients, it is awesome.

Ordering was a complete nightmare... I ordered on the internet for a good deal.. Didn't hear back from them.. They had lost my order. I had to order it at full price with no deal.. Pretty much expect to get a heart ache when you talk to verizon... But once you get everything set up correctly(Which may take awhile), the service is solid...

I have had FIOS for 1 year now in Bedford Mass. I was an early adopter. Installer was not familiar with my MAC, but I handled that part of it. I have only lost the connection once or twice and that was due to local power failure that left the entire neighborhood dark. I have not used tech support at all, so my rating for tech support is a guess. I have the lowest tier, 5MB, which was fine since I was on dialup. I have the dlink 624 router. Their website said it would not work wireless with a MAC, but it worked just fine. I suspect they say this so they don't have to try to do tech support. I don't use the verizon e-mail or their 'verizon central'. A little confusion on the install, they did it in two days, first day installed wire and the box outside, 2nd day inside. I ordered via web.

    ----------

Updated 12/11/07. We upgraded to triple play with FIOS TV on 12/3/07. Interesting setup, needed new router (which they provided) since the schedule is received via the net. Saved a bit of money due to triple play (had Comcast before for cable). They were late arriving, but did call, and techs apologized and said other install went over expected time. Contrast to the original install, the techs knew more about the system (which isn't surprising as they've had time to learn the newer stuff). FIOS Tv runs fine, at least as well as Comcast, and we get more channels for lower price. No problems since install.

    -------------------------------------

Update July 25, 2008. Now we have billing issues. In May, they raised the price of the internet connection by disconnecting and reconnecting, ignoring the fact we signed for two years. (Billing tried to fix it, but apparently they can't.) This apparently caused rest of system to think we no longer have the triple play. Our monthly bill went from $ 138 to $ 180! I'm now planning to dump FIOS TV; it's not worth the new prices. The billing people try to help, but they are stuck with a computer system that is hideous. FIOS TV is now $80 per month, where before it was $62. I can't figure out how they can get away with raising prices after agreeing to keep the price for 2 years!

    -------------------------------------

Updated July 28. After speaking with a Verizon rep they told us the billing system is known to screw up like this. They apologized and told me they would issue a credit and it will be correct next month. I'm happy they can correct the billing - the service is great otherwise.

    --------------------------

August 25, 2008. Not surprisingly, the Verizon billing is STILL screwed up! Despite repeated calls and "promises" to fix it, Verizon is unable or UNWILLING to fix it. Our bill should be 141 per month according to the Verizon reps, but this time it is $169. They are simply unable to fi x the billing system and I am getting very very tired of having to call them EVERY SINGLE MONTH to complain. The billing people TRY to help, but they are totally stuck with a system that . I guess it is time to finally file a formal complaint with the State public utilities. Verizon is simply unable to fix their own errors, or unwilling to do so.!!!!!

We spent about a month researching FIOS from verizon. We saw a few people in our development have it installed, and we really needed something more friendly to 2-3 people online at a time going full blast. We had to wait 2 weeks for the internal and final part of the install, but this was only because they were booked solid till then. The folks who ran the conduit from the street side terminal were professional, left no mess. Looked like they were never there. The tech who did the house wiring informed us of all the different ins and outs of the service, and optimized our wireless router for the higher speeds we needed for multiple computers. Once he left we were in great shape, total time from arrival on site to handshake job well done: 3 hours 3 minutes. I can't wait for FOTV!

To sum it up we ordered the 15/2 mbps service. We received bundled service discounts, bringing the price down to 34.95 a month, up only 2 dollars from our previous 1.5/384 DSL service. The whole process went smoothly, with no complaints. We have a D-link extreme g wireless 4 port router, with the typical ONT outside where the fiber comes up out of the ground. CAT5E cable from there to the router. We have a dynamic IP via PPPoE. All calls in to FIOS tech support have been more than satisfactory.

Update!~ Well here we are in august of 2008! Service has been great, no complaints at all. Our poor actiontec router died from overheating a few weeks ago, so they sent a tech out to hook up a new revised version of the same model (to prevent overheating). They did this the same day!! Speed has remained rock solid in consistency, and we are now upgrading (free) to a 20/5 package that has taken over the 15/2's spot. Should take a few days to kick in on their end, but when it does i expect it will continue to be rock solid. We are heavily contemplating getting the bundled phone/internet/tv package for only 172 a month which includes all premium channels, 4 SD boxes and one DVR HD box.

If we get the bundled service i will update this review, but as for now we are still 100% satisfied with every aspect of the service.

    Updated 08/24/2008

Been almost three months and have only had one issue and that was a result of Tivo. Verizon pushed their new HD channels and realigned almost all of their channels in the process. So for one evening my 7 Tivos recorded some strange programs. I have upgraded to the 20 / 20. I have managed to convinced 21 people so far in my complex to drop Cox and go to this service. The picture quality is unreal. I also used the refer a friend option with my neighbors and have received the maximum of 12 each $50.00 gift checks that I can apply to my bill. That means at this rate my first 6 months are costing me about $24.00 a month which is a still. On all of my speed tests i have exceeded the 20 / 20. If your are in the Newport News, Virginia area and can get Fios I say drop Cavalier, Cox, Directv. I have only had Cox's service and it was in most cases worse then Charter and Suddenlink. I have had no billing issues to date and when I have called in the people I have spoken to were nice and quite knowledgeable.

***********************************************************************************************Ordered the triple play on Thursday May 28 around lunch time. and was given an install date of May 29th time window of 8-12. I was like wow technician showed up at my door at 10 am called me about an hour before to let me know his arrival time. This is in a MDU and form the time the work started in the MDU to my activation was 4 weeks plus. He did an excellent job installing ONT and running the required wires in the MDU. I was very impressed. He set up all three of my HD Tivos with cable cards single stream since they apparently dont have dual stream cards yet here. That was only draw back I had to take 6 single stream cards. I will contact the business office to see if they dual stream and if any one knows please hit me up and tell me. Overall I wish I had this 18 months ago Cox's service here in the MDU was really bad and they did not care. I plan to go door to door and let me neighbors know and come in look at the HD. Took 15/15 data plan

I have ordered the 15mbps/2mbps package of FIOS which comes in at $55 a month. The order was easy to make over the phone because I knew the webordering was flawed. I was able to get a appointment with an installer a week later. A few days before the install a crew installed the wire from the aerial box. One the install date the installer came ontime and hooked everything up. Once a cat5 jack was put in I was able to connect my old router up which was already configured for PPPoE. This let me get connected right off the bat. Once I was browsing around the tech had me do a speedtest to make sure everything was alright, which it was. As simple as the install was for me, I think that everyone that can get this service should.

Since that time I've upgraded to the 30mbps/5mbps package which still gives me all the bandwidth I need. The extra upload speed has come in handy with the video work I do.

Update Aug 08: Moved up again and upgraded my speeds to 50mbps/20mbps. This speed is incredible and is actually all available at all times. I didn't think this would be a reality since US internet is pretty crap for the most part, but this blows it out of the water. Downloading full cd's from Microsoft (MSDN) takes less then a minute and DVD's are downloaded in under 5 min. At this point I don't know if Verizon can really screw up with their amazing track record.
