Have had DSL almost as long as it has been available here. 1.5 mb/s was rock steady and never gave me a problem in 5 years. I heard through someone at work that ATT was pushing upgrades to existing subscribers. I called, and was surprised to hear that my line qualified for 6.0 mb/s, for the same amount I have been paying. I'm a long way off from the central office that feeds my neighborhood, so I expected that I would not get full speed. When they turned it up, I was surprised that I got around 4.0 mb/s down. There was some trouble in the following days, and I called tech support. After 2 calls, they dispatched a technician to check the line. After changing a cable pair, and replacing my outside protector, it was declared to be fixed. The stability was definitely back, but my download speed dropped to just under 3.0 mb/s. I restarted the modem from time to time, but no change in the speed. A few days ago I tried it again, and the speed went back to 4.0 mb/s down again. I suspect there may have been some cable maintenance that took place. I'm happy for now. All and all, I would say these guys have it figured out and deliver a good product at a fair price.

    Update 9/22/08:

I bought a 2Wire modem this weekend and installed it. Speed is now 5060/640 consistently. Apparently the modem used DOES make a difference.

    Speed, reliability

    Interesting.

I'd be curious to know if you could confirm that the speed drops if you switch back to the old modem (and give it a chance to retrain on a few dry runs before recording a test result).

What was the old modem brand and model and which 2wire are you using now?

    Re: Speed, reliability

Today I disconnected all computer equipment from phone and AC power lines due to a predicted thunderstorm. When I reconnected everything, the 2 Wire modem came up at about 3000/640. I tried retraining it from the diagnostic console, but for about 45 minutes it stayed low. It restarted on its own and came back up to 5149/643. To answer the questions from the above post, the old modem is a 5 year old Speedstream 5360. The 2 Wire is a 2701HG-B. I ran the comparison between the two before the line came up to full speed. Speedstream=2829/588 2Wire=3223/643.

I've come to the conclusion that my line is a little too far away from the CO to be solid all the time. The 2Wire modem seems to perform pretty well under less than ideal conditions.
