I have been a Verizon DSL user for 15 months (3.0/768 package) and Earthlink 768/128 for four years prior to that. I wont go in to the saga involved when I switched from ELNK to VOL but needless to say it was fraught with all the usual issues that relate to getting one line released before a new DSL line can be activated. It took six weeks and many phone calls. Ive only had two issues since under VOL DSL.
Given the history with my previous DSL switch I was leery about changing to FiOS. Admittedly, most of the previous DSL switch issues were not of Verizons doing but regardless, I did not want another set of problems, especially as my DSL is now extremely stable. However, I chose FiOS initially because I wanted to change my phone calling package and to do so my phone number had to change. Knowing that would play havoc with DSL I decided to switch to FiOS Internet and get the phone package/number changed all in one go.
I ordered FiOS over the phone because I had lots of questions the online order process did not answer. I was connected to a FiOS trained sales person who seemed to know all necessary to place the entire order. I was informed my DSL would not be disconnected until after the FiOS Internet and new phone number were up and running. I got a confirmation letter about a week later and noticed a plan feature was missing so I called back and the order was updated promptly. Four days before the install the line burial contractor called to ask permission to enter my back yard to mark the line route. Two days before the install I got an automated call from Verizon confirming the actual install details.
The day before the install the burial contractor came and actually ran the line from the local box to the side of my house. Before doing anything they knocked on the door and asked permission to use my garden hose and explained they would only be doing outside work. They left things in reasonable shape but in all fairness, we had just had two days of pouring rain and the ground was kind of soft and muddy anyway.
My house is already wired with Cat5e and I had a spare run from the garage to my study so I made sure myself before the install that this was all hooked-up correctly. I also already had a spare outlet in the garage where the BBU would need to go so I was anticipating a smooth installation. The installation guys arrived within their time window. We discussed the existing wiring and they got to work. They told me they could piggy-back the data over all the Cat5s serving my multiple phone outlets if desired but I elected to have it just on the dedicated line I had to my study. One and half hours in to the install they warned me they were switching my phone over. Fifteen minutes later they asked me to plug in my router and switch to PPPoE. They ran an account activation (leaving off all the additional online software at my request) and we were live. Two hours start to finish.
Speed test shows 5154/1750.
Ordering with a local phone package got me the FiOS 5/2 for $29.95 for the first year ($34.95 thereafter).
Its very early days but so far they have delivered what they promised.
Update as of 08/24/07:
I don't think I've had any downtime yet on my data connection. Rock steady. Now if the higher speed tiers would arrive in TX it would be terrific!
