I live in an area where the only options are satellite and dial-up. Been with dial-up for a long time and went with a 1-way satellite system through StarConnect. Used that for a bit, worked great except if I downloaded over 2GB in a month my account was frozen until I called and had them turn it back on.
Decided in February to go with Hughes. Got the Home Plan. Installation went good. That's about all that did go good. After a few weeks I ended up contacting my state's attorney general to get Hughes to give me the speeds I should have been getting from the start. You know it's bad when dial-up can download a 50MB file faster than the supposed broadband satellite connection.
After Hughes contacted me about the AG complaint, they got me set up right and I was seeing constant near-plan speeds. I upgraded to Pro Plan just to get the extra download threshold since I was going to use it now. All went great for a little over a month, and now I'm almost back to where I started from with really poor speeds during a considerable portion of the day.
I will never, ever recommend HughesNet to anyone. Nobody needs to be put through all that BS.
EDIT: I may have to update my review soon. My transponder was switched without any notification, but it appears as if my service has gotten better. Haven't had any slowdowns or anything since the switch. I'll give it a month to see how stable it remains.
UPDATE: As of a few months ago I have dropped HughesNet in favor of Millenicom Wireless internet. Even though I'm on the fringe of coverage, I couldn't be any happier with the switch. Even with low signal I get so much better performance than I ever did with Hughes.
Buyer beware, get Hughes at your own risk. Dial-up may be the 'stone age' of internet, but you may be better off until something better comes along
