UPDATE: (08/18/2008) After six months of headaches dealing with tech support about my getting 1/3 of the speed I was paying for, I am now running at the 1.5Mbps I am paying for (1.3M to be more precise, which is better than I expected). I also found that my router was causing some of the lag that I experienced in online games (would get a periodic "hic-up" in WoW and CS:S). I replaced it and am very content with my connection now. My ratings for Windstream haven't changed much though...remember the six months of headaches.
***Have finally figured out that they DO have me set at the wrong speed. The problem was that the upgrade never got past billing. So the tech side had no idea that I was supposed to have 1.5M. Will change my review once the switch happens.
Had Valor previously and now Windstream since they bought them out. Never really got the speed I wanted with Valor. After Windstream took over I upgraded my 512Kbps to 1.5Mbps.
I can't get any faster than 445Kbps down. I am a degreed computer tech and have done everything in my power to solve this problem. I have spent countless, fruitless hours with tech support trying to solve the problem. For some reason every time I call they see the previous ticket and it says the problem was solved. I have scheduled for a tech to come out 3 times and all 3 times they don't show and when I call to complain they don't seem to know anything about it.It is getting a little ridiculous at this point. Distance is not an issue either. I know for a fact that I live less than a mile from the exchange. My Aunt lives in the boonies and gets 480Kbps of the 512 she subscribes to. My line conditions are within acceptable ranges (per online sources and Windstream "support").I just don't get it.
I can say that the connection I do get is pretty stable. I play WoW so I am glad of that.
I have seen other people mention the fact that they have no competition in the area and that seems to effect service. I find that to be the case. They just don't seem to care. I could switch the the local cable provider, and while it is much faster (so I've heard) it is also a lot more expensive.
Will keep y'all posted on who I had to "bribe" to get the problem fixed.
