Honest review from a DSL pioneer who works for this local phone co/ISP. It is what it is. My DSL dropped yesterday due to a bad card in my local CO, 23 other people on my DSLAM card were also dead in the water. Diagnosed and fixed in about 2 hours, but I work for Windstream so I have an unfair advantage. Here lately I have seen unreliable speed performance in some of the areas I serve. Mid to late afternoon from some offices even a 6M line struggles to go 1-2M. I'm not sure if it is a local issue but suspect a combination of factors are responsible. 1) WS is pushing sales but I'm not sure if they are adding more backbone as the number of subscribers increases. Lately we in the field are concerned the company is looking for a new owner (we have survived this deregulated owner shuffle 4 times in the last ten years). Why you ask? It seems to us they are reducing the number of employees and the amount of money spent on infrastructure repairs and rehabs. This follows the same pattern we saw when we lost GTE to Verizon, when Verizon sold KY to Alltel, and when Alltel created Windstream. 2) more users, more users, more users. myspace, facebook, streaming music, VOIP,streaming news,video,movies.... it is the information superhighway so why be surprised when you hit traffic jams? whether you use dial up, DSL, cable modem, T1, or fiber you all must fit into the same pipeline somewhere on your path thru the ethernet cloud. 3) $$$$$ show me the money... every provider, website, ISP, and corporation in this country is only focusing on the bottom line. So enough of the soap box you ask, where is your review? It is in the 2nd line....IT IS WHAT IT IS Usually my DSL is very reliable, but even employees of this provider have phone and internet problems at times. The phone cable in my area is very small gauge (26g) and my DSL drops about once a month very briefly. It dropped just 2 hours ago for about 1 minute. Am I happy with my service, usually YES. Could it be better? OF COURSE IT COULD BE. Is any company likely to invest alot of money to improve my service? NOT LIKELY. It is what it is and until something better comes along I keep using Windstream, even after I retire. NEWS FLASH I RETIRED MAY 30, 2008
