update December 2007: only thing different is speeds are faster. still can't get FIOS, but it's close. As soon as FIOS arrives, it's buh bye comcast.

Update August 2006: the status quo maintains since the last review a year ago; it's a little less painful since I now have comcast TV and no longer have to pay the $15 non-bundling penalty; everything still stands as written below; have not had any problems since original review, so connection reliability still excellent. One new note: I have no choice for broadband providers - it's comcast or dialup for me. This is the only reason I put up with the downsides to being a comcast customer.

Comcast is the monopoly provider for internet in my area, I can't get DSL. Over the last three years or so, the service has only been interrupted a couple of times, once due to the aftermath of a hurricane - high marks for reliability.

That's the end of the good news. Comcast is not particularly good for gamers, as the connection quality varies with the load on the system. Fine for downloading, email or web surfing, but a little too "noisy" for good gaming all the time.

Tech support is pitiful. If you have a real problem that is on comcast's side (eg, not a router or pc problem) it is very difficult to a) get them to even recognize a problem and b) get them to do something about it. Last time I had a problem (severe intermittant packet loss, widely varying ping times) it took two months of persistent calling and a couple of complaints to the county to get them to finally do something. I never did find out what was done, it just all of a sudden got better.

Finally, it really ticks me off that I have to pay the $15 "penalty" for not having CATV: HSI is $45/mo. if you have cable tv, $60/mo if you don't. Please don't bring up the BS about "bundling discounts"; before the word "bundling" was ever spoken, I used to pay $45/mo without having cable tv. Then one day, notice was received that if I didn't have tv, the price of HSI was increasing to $60/mo. Oh, by the way, did you know the price of basic cable is $15/mo?
