I really can't keep a tally of dates and years like the other members have mentioned, but I have been an optimum online cablevision customer for seven years. I had it since my freshman year of highschool, and now I'm in my third year of college... time sure flies by fast.
I remember from day one having optimum online was a dream, finally cable has arrived in the area. No more waiting for hours on napster to finish downloading music, no more phonecalls to long distance areas for internet, no more high phone bills, and most importantly, no more limited activity to one thing at a time.
The speeds they advertised from day one were the speeds I received since day one. Every year or so they would upgrade slowly, but surely, their speed of their network. Whatever they advertise, is what you get, nothing more or nothing less. Or you get your money back in 30-days, and most importantly it's not a contract. OOL gave me the speeds I wanted back then, gave me the pings I wanted in counter-strike, and allowed me to play and communicate long distance a few thousands miles with an ease. I rarely had latency issues, or downtime issues, and the only times that happened was either the network was down due to a storm, a maintenence upgrade, or due to cappage. And you know what? Their tech support always helped, and knew what they were talking about.
I had one issue with OOL, and that was capping. I have gotten capped a total of four times due to consistent uploading, which really got me mad. I know there are a lot of questions as of right now regarding capping, but let me tell you... as a boosted customer which I'm VERY satisfied with I have not gotten capped in the past few months. I own a private server with massive amounts of storage online, since I think external hardrives are unreliable, so I upload many gigs at a time. I'm a fan of BT as well, always giving back. I was going to switch over to fios because of the capping issue, like I wanted a reason to. I uploaded massive amounts after I got boosted on purpose just so that I could get capped, which would give me an excuse to switch... but that didn't happen... I don't think that it will either. Even while uploading at full speed the internet is still pretty fast, with hardly any slowdown. I don't notice my bandwith being used, and can browse the internet, stream videos, use voip, and webcam... which is pretty impressive.
That extra 15 dollars I'm telling you makes a HUGE difference, and it's definitely worth every single penny. OOL Boosted is the closest you can get to the highest speeds at residential levels, and most importantly it destroys any isp in the area, except the top packages of fios. But it destroys fios in the aspect that fios isn't available everywhere, unlike OOL which is.
All in all, after seven years even if fios does drop in prices, I would still stick with OOL only because of the support and expectations I received. I'm honestly not expecting any more from them, and am very satisfied. I lose only 1mbps during peak hours (equivalent to roughly 100-120ish kbs) from the 30mbps. But no one ever hits those speeds anyway unless you're on lan, so what's the point?
No capping, advertised speeds, no hidden fees, no contract, fast speeds, affordable price, what more could a person possibly want?

| 31 MB Down with Boost I just replaced my router. I wanted to see the impact on my net since the last time I checked I was at 20 Meg. I have not run a speed test in 2 months. The speed blew my mind 31 Meg down and 4 Meg up. I ran it 3 or 4 times on 2 different machines.
FIOS just came down my block, a day or so after somebody down the street had it installed everybody near me lost our entire cable connection. Verizon must have hit the cable when they were digging. Most of our outages in the last 2 year seemed to involve some recent Verizon work. | |
