    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
I've had Optimum Online for approx. four or five years now. Had a lot of problems every summer, but OOL never fixed them. Finally, after months of disputes and even cancelling and trying out DSL before coming back, they sent a tech out here who actually knew what he was doing and fixed the problem. It was a problem on the pole, and they would never fix it, even though I told them all along it was outside.... Well, it's fixed so I'm not going to give them a bad review since their service is good and I'm not going to give a lengthy review because thousands of other people have already done so. So my revised review for January 2007....

Pre Sales Information - 4, they could do better, explaining capping. I've never been capped.

Install Coordination - 4, self installed so no problems here, but they could do better with the system registration of the modem. How many times have I had problems with new modems being registered on my account? Probably four or five times over the life of the service.

Connection Reliability - 3, horrible reliability for years, was due to a bad amplifier outside my house. They wouldn't listen to me, they sent many techs out here and they were never here when it was down (intermittent problem) or if they were, they lied to me and never submitted a work order. January 2nd 2007, a nice tech actually came out and spent close to three hours finding the problem and PUTTING a work order in. The next day, it was fixed and it has been up ever since. If it remains to be trouble free, I'll give them a 5 since the service IS very reliable if you don't have an annoying local problem on the pole outside. We'll see how this one goes, but due to past problems, I give them a 3.

Tech support - 1, They have to have the most horrible tech support team ever. Located in Newark, NJ, you are getting some pissed off minimum wage guy who was probably given the job due to his race and not his qualifications. To be honest, they SUCK. I rather not deal with them at all. Nine out of ten experiences have been negative, the one out of ten have been great.. Kind of weird, but true.

Services - 4, Optimum Online is a great service, if you don't have to deal with Tech Support or their field techs. When you pay the bill and receive the service, it works perfect. If you ask for more from them (customer support or a tech visit), you are asking for trouble.

Value for Money - 5, It's a great deal. I'm going to Verizon FIOS when it becomes available, only because for less month per month, I'll get more bandwidth and plus I think the idea of fiber to the home is cool and I'm a tech geek!

So, Optimum Online is a great service. I recommend it. But if you have the option of Verizon FIOS (Fiber Optics to the Home), I recommend you go with them only because it's cheaper and you get more for your money plus fiber is just cool!

As of January 2007, I am using a Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem provisioned at the standard 15mbps/2mbps package, receiving 99% of the advertised bandwidth.

EDIT: On December 3rd 2007, I switched internet providers to Verizon FIOS after waiting several years for the service to become available. Cancelled the same day, service (TV/Internet/Phone) has been great so far with FIOS and I highly recommend them if available, otherwise Optimum Online is a great deal.
