Source: Steven Musil Americans appear to be getting more comfortable watching videos online--and Google is the clear winner. Internet users in the U.S. watched 12.7 billion online videos in November, an increase of 34 percent versus a year ago, according to numbers released Monday by market researcher ComScore.
Thanks to YouTube, Google Sites retained the crown as the top U.S. video property with nearly 5.1 billion videos viewed--or about 40 percent of all videos viewed online--with the video-sharing site accounting for more than 98 percent of Google's traffic. Fox Interactive Media was a distant second with 439 million videos watched (or 3.5 percent), followed by Viacom Digital with 325 million videos watched (2.6 percent). The data also showed that 77 percent of all U.S. Internet users had viewed online videos in 2008, and that the average online video viewer watched 273 minutes of video. » news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-101320···-1_3-0-5comments? Fulton, III, BetaNews Mod Note - Please Note Date of Article: April 9, 2008 [Older Beta News] It could soon become one of the most ubiquitous examples of the AIR platform in popular use: Adobe today formally published its Adobe Media Player 1.0 software, which is designed to be both a delivery system and stand-alone console for Flash video, including high-resolution media. During the product's beta period of almost exactly one year, it had already obtained official partners -- including CBS, MTV Networks, and NBC/Fox joint venture Hulu -- which began using the non-release version anyway as an alternate delivery platform for their shows. So the player was already receiving widespread attention even during a time when it wasn't exactly clear to partners what they should call the player. By NICK WINGFIELD Kenny Johnson, a senior credit analyst for Fox Home Entertainment in Garden Grove, Calif., recently took a hard look at his finances -- and canceled his c-television subscription. With a newborn child at home and growing household expenses, he says the decision saved him and his wife more than $40 a month -- or roughly the increase he is paying at the gas pump every month for his commute to work. The couple held onto their DSL Internet connection, which costs about $38 a month. Now the Johnsons access most of their television shows online, through Web sites like Hulu.com, in addition to the free broadcasts they pick up over the airwaves. They also bought a set-top box that allows them to stream shows via Netflix.com to their television set, including episodes of NBC's "The Office" and Showtime's "Weeds." » online.wsj.com/article/SB1222992···497.htmlcomments? What's a hulu? In August 2007, this question ricocheted through the blogosphere to a chorus of derisive laughter. Fox and NBC were going to make the Internet safe for television! They were building a "YouTube killer"! And they were calling it Hulu! It was almost too perfectan absurdist topper to the idea that two major broadcast networks could devise an Internet video service people would actually use. story continues..comments?
