“Industry observers said the company’s move is likely to spell the end of the system access fee, which is thoroughly hated by consumers,” says the story, quoting John Lawford, counsel for the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, as saying:

“It’s the number one complaint about cellphones. People are getting a little more traction with their pushback in a lot of telecom issues now. We just might see the end of it. We’ll see them slowly disappear.”

The price of Apple’s phone just went up, facing Macolytes with a tough new decision:

Buy an iPhone 3G? Or take a luxury holiday in the Bahamas?

They’d cost about the same.

Rogers is now apparently trying to defuse the iPhone PR disaster with a $30-a-month data deal subscribers can add to their voice plans.

“Rogers Communications has caved into consumer pressure and is offering a limited rollback of rates for the new Apple iPhone 3G being launched Friday,” says the Vancouver Sun, also noting:

“The new Rogers rate, available only for subscribers who activate their phones before Aug. 31, is $30 a month for a six-gigabyte data plan that can be added to new or existing voice plans with Rogers - but only if they sign up for a three-year contract.

“Rogers is also limiting sales to two phones per customer.”

The Ottawa Citizen has Boynton angrily contesting Net reports of a major rift between Rogers and Apple.

However, �there is no truth to Internet reports that Apple has pared back the number of iPhones coming to Canada,� he says in the story, which goes on >>>

�Despite popular rumour mongering, which is always a popular sport on the Internet, we have more than enough inventory,� said John Boynton, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer for Rogers. �In fact, we are getting our inventory plus some.�

Online sites such as Smithereensblog.blogspot.com have been reporting on the relationship between Apple and Rogers, stating that Rogers� cellular data pricing is too high and that Apple is not happy about them. The blog has since retracted most of its story, now referring to it as a �plausible rumour.�

Canada ranks toward the very bottom among developed countries for cellphone penetration as the lack of competition leaves Canadians with some of the highest prices for wireless services in the world. Indeed, Rogers has a monopoly on the iPhone since it is the only Canadian carrier currently capable of carrying the device.

Rogers Communications iSays it’ll bring the iPhone to Canada on July 11 at the same prices as AT&T, “but it will require customers to sign three-year contracts.”

The iPhone will be the only device with the three-year option which, “would prevent Rogers’ customers from defecting to new entrants and taking their iPhones with them,”

“Under Rogers’ current rules, cancelling a contract early incurs a penalty of $20 per month remaining in the deal, up to a maximum of $400.”

It’s no coincidence Rogers and Sympatico now have the same 60-gig limit in Ontario and similar pricing schemes, or that Sympatico and Videotron have the same 30-gig limit and an almost similar cost structure in Quebec. What we’re seeing is duopolies completely controlling the market, and squeezing it.
